| Details | A decibarn (db) is a unit of area used primarily in nuclear and particle physics to quantify the cross-sectional area of interaction between particles. It is a non-SI unit and is equal to 1x10^-24 barns. A barn, which is equal to 1x10^-28 square meters, is another non-SI unit commonly used in this field. The term "barn" was used humorously to describe the relatively large cross-sectional areas of atomic nuclei, as compared to the much smaller interaction areas in particle collisions. The term decibarn (decimals of a barn) was later introduced to account for smaller interaction areas.
