Details An electron volt (eV) is a unit of energy commonly used in the field of atomic, molecular, nuclear, and particle physics. It is defined as the amount of kinetic energy gained or lost by an electron when it is accelerated through an electric potential difference of one volt. Essentially, it represents how much energy an electron gains due to its electrostatic interaction in a potential electric field.

Since eV is a unit of energy, it can be converted to other energy units, such as joules (J). One electron volt is equal to approximately 1.602 x 10^(-19) joules. This small energy value is convenient for describing energies at atomic and subatomic scales.

The electron volt unit is often used to express energy levels of elementary particles, energy transitions in atoms, bond energies in molecules, and the energies of photons emitted or absorbed in various physical processes. It is also used to represent the masses of subatomic particles since, according to Einstein's famous formula E=mc^2, mass and energy are interrelated.
