This is because, in binary systems, the base is 2, so kilobyte means 2 to the power of 10, which equals 1024.

Traditionally, the kilobyte has been used to represent approximately 1000 bytes (10^3 bytes) in some contexts. However, due to the binary nature of computer systems, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standardized the usage of kibi, as a prefix for binary multiples in 1998, to reduce confusion.

Thus, the binary kilobyte (kB) has been replaced with the kibibyte (KiB) in some fields. Similarly, 1 kibibyte (1 KiB) equals 1024 bytes or 2^10 bytes.
