Mebibyte is a binary multiple of bytes and is used to denote storage capacities, memory sizes, file sizes, and other related metrics in the field of data. By defining binary-based units like mebibytes, the IEC eliminated confusion between the different data storage measurements that used to occur when both base-10 and base-2 systems shared the same unit names (e.g., kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabyte).
