TNT, or trinitrotoluene, is a chemical compound commonly used as a reference explosive material. Its energy release upon detonation is often used as a standard for comparing the energy output of other explosive materials and events. The energy released from one tonne of TNT is approximately 4.184 gigajoules.

A petatonne of TNT (often written as "Pt TNT") is equal to one quadrillion (10^15) tonnes of TNT. This is an incredibly large measurement of energy, and it can be used to quantify significant events such as the impact of large asteroids, the energy released by supernovae, or the total energy consumption of a country or the world in a given time period.

To put it in perspective, the energy released by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 was about 15 kilotons of TNT, while the largest nuclear weapon ever tested, the Tsar Bomba by the Soviet Union, had an explosive yield of around 50-58 megatons of TNT.
