Details A tebibit (Tibit) is a unit of information or digital data storage in computer science and telecommunications. It is one of the units defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to address the confusion that arises from using the traditional SI units, like the terabit (Tbit), for these same purposes.

The tebibit is a member of the binary prefix system, which is based on powers of 2, rather than the standard metric system, which uses powers of 10. One tebibit is equivalent to 2^40 bits, or 1,099,511,627,776 bits. This is slightly more than the standard unit terabit (Tbit), which is equivalent to 10^12 bits, or 1,000,000,000,000 bits.

The binary prefix system uses the "bi" notation in the name (such as tebibit) to represent the corresponding binary unit, whereas the standard metric unit uses plain "bit" or "byte" (such as terabit). In this way, the IEC has created a distinction between the units based on the different systems, making it clear what power of size is being used for computation or data storage.
